Career Changers

Thinking about changing your career? Here are some things to consider!

  • Current Interests – Do you have any specific areas you are interested in OR do you just know it’s time for a change?
    • There are longer, more detailed interest inventories that can show how your interests and
aptitudes can translate into career options. Contact Career Services to talk!
    • Are there lateral moves that might be options?
  • Strengths – What do you bring to a position? Have confidence in what you have done and the skills you would potentially bring to a new career.
  • Transferable Skills – What qualities or skillset would be applicable to the position/field you are interested in?
  • Experience – Do you have any related experience to the new career (e.g., volunteer, seasonal
    employment)?
  • Time – How much time do you plan to take for a transition? Is it immediate or are you planning?

Building Your Transition

  • Research and talk to people in the field you are interested in for career information and
    networking!
    • Find out what skills and qualities they are seeking – are there any you would need to
add to your qualifications to apply?
  • Make a case for a transition – it is important for you to connect the dots for the employer
during the application process (e.g., resume, cover letter, interview).
    • Tailored materials are always suggested, but especially significant during a career
      transition!
  • Can you build some experience in your desired field, if you do not have any related
    experience at present?
