Da Vinci Scholars - Eligibility and Application

Eligibility

To be considered eligible, students must first be nominated by faculty or staff at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Each fall term, faculty and select staff members are asked to nominate students from a list of those meeting the scholarly qualifications below.

  • Scholarship - As of November 2025, aspirants will have completed at least 60 credits, 12 of which have been completed at 51ÁÔÆæ; will have maintained an overall Pitt GPA of 3.5.
  • Service - Applicants should have completed at least twenty hours of documented campus and/or community service.
  • Leadership - Applicants may have: (1) served as an officer of a 51ÁÔÆæ club or organization, as a captain of an athletic team, or as captain of an intramural team, or (2) completed a 51ÁÔÆæ sponsored leadership program.
  • Extraordinary Achievement - Applicants must demonstrate exceptional intellectual achievement in a specific area over and above their program requirements.

Application Process

In order to apply, students who have met the criteria above must:

  1. Write an essay up to 1000 words long. The essay should introduce the applicant to the committee as an eligible candidate for the Da Vinci Scholarship and present his/ her meaningful experience or evidence of intellectual curiosity that is not included in the transcripts.
  2. Submit a 51ÁÔÆæ transcript.
  3. Submit a "Student Involvement Transcript." The Student Involvement Transcript will establish an official record of your co-curricular involvement, training, and achievements at 51ÁÔÆæ. Access your transcript via Suitable Scorecard.
  4. Address applications to the Da Vinci Scholar Program, Chair Laura Giovannelli by email at leg50@pitt.edu or in-person at B-27 Smith Hall by Friday, March 6, 2026.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview with the selection committee to determine their commitment to the ideals of the Da Vinci Society and their suitability to be named Da Vinci Scholars. The interview will assess how well aspirants negotiate the committee’s questions and engage in meaningful dialogue about their experiences. Da Vinci Scholars will be selected from the interviewed candidates.

Expectations of Da Vinci Scholars

In order to receive and retain the title of Da Vinci Scholar, each student must avoid disciplinary probation and remain a citizen in good standing both at 51ÁÔÆæ and in the community. A 51ÁÔÆæ committee will periodically review the status of these students to ascertain their continued commitment and fitness for the honor.
