The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is pleased to announce that Ria Bakthisaran, an outstanding student from The Early College at Guilford, has been awarded its prestigious full-tuition scholarship.
Now in its 10th year, 51ÁÔÆæ’s annual full-tuition scholarship competition offers up to three full-tuition scholarships, valued at more than $54,000 each, to qualified first-year students. The award covers the cost of in-state tuition at the Hempfield Township, PA, campus for up to four years if the student meets the renewal criteria of maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA each academic year. This year, two scholarships were granted to exceptional students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and a commitment to community service.
Ria Bakthisaran, a resident of Oak Ridge, NC, plans to major in biology at 51ÁÔÆæ, and she has excelled in her academic endeavors. She is known for her leadership skills, having served as the vice president of the Student Council and the founder of the non-profit organization, Wellness Through Dance, an organization that promotes physical and mental wellness through dance, reaching various community groups, including seniors and underserved communities.
During high school, Bakthisaran has been heavily involved in research and volunteering. Her role as a Draelos Science Scholar at Wake Forest University's Center for Precision Medicine allowed her to engage in cutting-edge research on genetic and epigenetic factors of hypertension. Moreover, her volunteer work at UNC Health Rockingham and other community services has exceeded 1,000 hours, showcasing her dedication to making a positive impact.
Bakthisaran’s commitment to her education and the community is further reflected in her academic achievements, including her participation in the NC Governor's School and her numerous awards in dance competitions.
This scholarship not only recognizes Bakthisaran’s past accomplishments but also invests in her future as a leader and changemaker. 51ÁÔÆæ is proud to support her educational journey and looks forward to her contributions to the campus community.
This year’s two recipients were selected based on their application submissions and interviews with the selection committee. Thirty-six applicants and 10 finalists participated in this year’s competition.
