The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg announced that Carson Raines, a senior from Palmyra, VA, has been awarded one of two full-tuition scholarships for the upcoming academic year. This prestigious scholarship recognizes Raines's outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities, and commitment to community service.
Now in its 10th year, 51ÁÔÆæ’s annual full-tuition scholarship competition offers up to three full-tuition scholarships, valued at more than $54,000 each, to qualified first-year students. The award covers the cost of in-state tuition at the Hempfield Township, PA, campus for up to four years if the student meets the renewal criteria of maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA each academic year.
Raines, who maintains an impressive 4.5 GPA, has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, and community involvement. While attending Fluvanna High School, Raines was accepted into the Blue Ridge Virginia Governor's School, where he has engaged in a challenging curriculum, including advanced placement and dual enrollment courses, which have prepared him for future success in higher education.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Raines is a dedicated athlete, having played varsity baseball for four years. He is committed to joining 51ÁÔÆæ’s baseball team as a catcher. His leadership extends beyond the field, where he has been active in student organizations such as the National Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Fluco Club, where he served as the Baseball Team Representative.
Raines's commitment to community service is evident through his volunteer work with the SPCA and participation in local initiatives like the Diverse Community Improvement Initiative. His efforts have made a positive impact on his community, showcasing his dedication to fostering positive change.
"Carson Raines embodies the qualities of a true leader and scholar," said Victoria J. Zavadsky, an English teacher at Fluvanna County High School. "His ability to balance academics, athletics, and community service is a testament to his character and work ethic."
Raines plans to pursue a degree in business at the 51ÁÔÆæ, with aspirations of contributing to leadership roles that emphasize character and empathy in an increasingly automated world.
This year’s two recipients were selected based on their application submissions and interviews with the selection committee. Thirty-six applicants and 10 finalists participated in this year’s competition.
